Graduate Studies seeks student, staff, faculty awards nominations

LAWRENCE — The Office of Graduate Studies invites the University of Kansas community to nominate faculty, staff and graduate students for awards that recognize exceptional efforts in teaching, mentoring and service. Award recipients will be honored at the annual KU Graduate Awards Ceremony at 3:30 p.m. April 24 in Kansas Union Ballroom.

All nominations are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 26 and can be submitted through the awards' respective websites.

Outstanding Graduate Support Staff Award

The quality and continuity of graduate programs at KU, as well as the experience of the graduate students in the programs, depend in large measure on the talent and commitment of the graduate support staff.

The Outstanding Graduate Support Staff Award ($500) recognizes the incredible contributions to graduate education made by staff members who provide invaluable service to KU and its community of students, faculty and staff.

Byrd Graduate Educator Award

The Louise Byrd Graduate Educator Award was established to honor the memory of Louise Byrd, longtime secretary of the Graduate School and Graduate Council. Byrd was noted for her deep concern for the welfare of graduate students. 

In her memory, a faculty member who demonstrates the qualities of concern for graduate students as scholars and individuals is presented with this $1,000 award.

Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards

Graduate teaching assistants (GTA) at KU are eligible for three awards: the Chancellor’s GTA award ($2,000), the Carlin GTA awards ($1,000) and the GTA Awards ($750). These awards recognize excellence in teaching by GTAs who have demonstrated outstanding professional interactions with students and faculty.

Awardees receive monetary prizes provided by the generous funding of the KU chancellor and KU Endowment.

Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Service

The Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Service ($500) was established in 1983 and is presented annually to a graduate student who has demonstrated a genuine commitment to serving KU while maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
