About the Earth, Energy, and Environment Center
The Earth Energy and Environment Center is a 140,000 ft2, $78.5 million state-of-the-art complex consisting of Ritchie and Slawson Halls on the University of Kansas campus.
Its focus is to build on KU’s strengths into areas where KU has national prominence in geology, energy, and environment research and education. Its goal is to make a difference in the world through research, education, and outreach.
The mechanism to achieve this impact includes the following types of integration:
- Petroleum Engineering and the Geosciences faculty and students are brought together in the same facilities to enhance interdisciplinary interactions
- University research and industry application come together
- State-of-the-art labs are accessible to students
- Students are engaged in learning through real-world exercises using flipped classroom approach and industry-standard software and facilities
- Research and teaching in energy (fossil fuels and renewables) and environment (water resources and climate) are combined
- Programs for bringing faculty and students of various disciplines together
- Public outreach
- Buildings are physically linked through walkways and tunnels
